Hearth Broom with Alaskan Driftwood Handle
This hearth broom features a truly one-of-a-kind handle made from Alaskan driftwood, beachcombed in Homer, Alaska and carried back to Southwest Virginia by my mother from her dry cabin there. Shaped by the sea, this particular handle still holds a small stone lodged within it, a quiet mark of its journey through water, weather, and time.
While the handle carries the story of the Alaskan shoreline, everything else about this broom is rooted firmly in place. It is hand-bound using traditional Appalachian broom-making techniques, made without electric machinery, and shaped for steady hearth and stove work. A meeting of two landscapes, joined by hand and made for use.
No two will ever be the same.
Care & Use
Use to sweep hearths, stove fronts, and hard surfaces around the home. Shake out ash and debris after use. Always hang by the leather hanging loop when not in use. Never store bristle-side down, as this can bend and weaken the broomcorn over time. Keep dry between uses. With regular work, the broomcorn will soften and wear naturally, while the driftwood handle will continue to show the character of its past life.
Materials: Alaskan driftwood, natural broomcorn, charcoal gray nylon twine, and leather hanging loop.
Dimensions: (By Hanging Loop) approx. 35”x9”x3”
Products ship on Mondays and Fridays each week.
No returns or exchanges accepted.
